Five Career Gems I Learned Before Turning 35
As I roll into my 35th year (cue confetti, coffee, and maybe a slight concern about the future), I’ve been reflecting on the winding, weird, and wonderfully unpredictable journey that is my career.
I've been hired, laid off, promoted-well, not really, entrusted with more responsibilities, energized, exhausted—you name it. But out of all the highs and lows, I’ve managed to pocket some pretty solid gems of wisdom.
In the spirit of keeping things light and not writing a novel titled “35 Lessons in 35 Years” (who has the time?!), I’m sticking with five. Five big lessons that shaped me—and might help you too.
1. Connections Are Everything
It turns out the age-old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” isn’t entirely wrong—though I prefer to say:
“It’s what you learn from who you know.”
Building relationships—genuine ones—has opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Whether it was support during a layoff, leads for new projects, or just someone to say, “You got this,” connections have been my lifeline. Life and work are team sports. Don’t play solo.
2. Always Have a Plan B (And C… and Z)
Let me tell you—nothing humbles you faster than a layoff. One minute you're looking towards next quarter's goals and budgeting for personal needs, the next you're Googling “How to file for unemployment" while eating cereal.
The key takeaway? Setbacks happen, often when you least expect them. Flexibility is your friend. So build skills, explore side hustles, and stay ready to pivot. Life rarely follows a straight line, and honestly, the detours have taught me the most.
3. Health Is Wealth
No job, no deadline, no performance review is worth sacrificing your mental or physical health. Period.
I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that rest isn't a reward—it's a requirement. Your energy is a currency. Spend it wisely. Recharging is productive. You can’t reach your goals if you’re running on fumes.
4. Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket (Scramble Them, Maybe?)
I used to believe I had to follow one clear path. One job. One industry. One way. But the truth? Diversifying your skillset and being open to new opportunities is where the magic happens.
Careers aren’t linear. Life changes. Sometimes the job you never imagined becomes the one that lights you up. So stay curious, stay open, and don’t be afraid to start over if something better calls.
5. Advocate for Yourself
Confidence is key, and no one will champion you like you can.
I don't have it all figured out. (Let’s be real—I still forget to drink enough water some days.) What I do know is this: careers evolve, people grow, and your journey is uniquely yours. There’s no “right” way to do it—but there are definitely lessons to pick up along the ride.
So here’s to growth, grit, and even better days ahead.
Happy 35 to me—and cheers to wherever your journey leads next!
